As a youth football coach your job gets easier as the number of players participating in organized sports increases. Participation in any kind of organized sport teaches your players about listening to coaches, dealing with other teammates, competing, working towards a goal, attending practice, sportsmanship, time management and teamwork. There are always hurdles to overcome for the first time organized sports player that other players that have played do not have to deal with.

I’m a strong supporter of involving youth in a variety of sports at a young age and letting them figure out which one they like best. Specializing at a young age may exclude the player from a sport they may love or excel at in favor of one they may grow out of.

Certain sports seem to prepare the youth football player a bit better for football than others. Again, I’m not suggesting you favor these sports over others; this is just an observation over 15 years of coaching football as to which sports seem to have the best transfer of skills over to youth football.

From Best to Worst:

1) Wrestling; By Far #1, Wrestlers understand leverage and physical contact. They are involved in a sport that requires tremendous physical endurance, so the practices they attend are grueling. Wrestlers are usually very good tacklers and are easy to teach. They are usually “tough” and compared to a wrestling practice, our practices are a breeze.
2) Hockey
3) Lacrosse
4) Track
5) Martial Arts
6) Basketball
7) Baseball

So if you are out recruiting football players, you may want to start with your local youth wrestling program, then work your way down the list. It is very rare that you will find a wrestler, hockey or lacrosse player that will not excel in football.

This doesn't mean you can't find a skateboarder, swimmer, gymnast or BMX racer that could make a good football player, it's just we rarely see them try to play

1. Try your race goggles in open water swims *before* the actual race. The visibility that you experience in the pool will be noticeably diminished in the open water. It doesn't make sense at all for something as simple as goggles to severely affect your swim, so esnure that you're confident with your current specs. If they leak, fog, or offer poor sighting in the open water, get a new pair. A company called Aquasphere makes a great swim mask with good face hugging capabilities and awesome visibility.

2. Swim with high elbows. The choppy open water will take your smooth swim stroke that you've practiced in the pool and completely swallow up your recovery and entry unless you get the arm sufficiently above the water. Practice a high elbow recovery by "zipping" an imaginary zipper up the side of your body with each stroke.

3. Sight off landmarks, not buoys. With the splashing, extra bodies, and overall commotion, buoys can become very tough to see in some open water swims. Attempt to focus on larger, more visible objects, like stationary boats, bridges or houses on the shore. Try to line these up as close as possible to your swim course, and you'll have a much easier time staying on target.

4. Swim on the perimeters. In a large triathlon with many participants in each wave, you'll experience less frustration and be able to maintain a steadier pace if you stay to the outside or inside of the group. While drafting may not be as readily available, you'll waste much less energy changing your pace to match the group. Just beware - in you swim on the inside of the group, there will be quite a bit of position jockeying as you approach the turn buoy, so be ready to fight off other swimmers.

5. Practice swimming with groups. Many of us get used to a relaxing, solo swim in the pool or open water, then completely panic when a hundred other bodies are thrown in the water along with us. Swim at the local beach during busy times, swim at your pool during "family" swim time, join an outdoor or indoor master's swim group, and get used to not having the water to yourself. This will help you experience more choppiness in the water, assist you with unexpected changes of pace, and train you, both mentally and physically, to adapt to the movements of other bodies in the water while staying relaxed.

5 Top Kenya Water Safari Sports and Activities

1. Snorkeling and Diving

Masks and snorkels are available for rent on the beach for Kshs 100. You’ll need a boat to get out to the reef. Most trips to the park provide their own snorkeling gear. Certified divers can take dives with local tour companies, or more expensively at the coral reef Lodge or Pemba channel fishing club. Dive courses and longer scuba safaris are also possible in the Pemba channel.

2. Deep sea fishing The Pemba channel is famous for deep-sea fishing, and Pemba channel fishing club holds over 50% of Kenya’s marlin- fishing records. Boats cost from USD 500 for nine hours (valid for up to four fishers). This company promotes tag and release which I strongly encourage as an eco-friendly measure.

3. Diving Tours in Shimoni on Kenya coast

Various companies offer organised dhow tours for snorkeling, all leaving Shimoni by 9am. Transfers from North –and south- coast hotels are available. (US$10 TO 20), and longer trips with overnights stays can also be arranged. Children pay half the adult price. Certified divers can take one/two scuba dives for an extra US$30/50 with any of these companies.

4. Swimming with Dolphins in Kenya Coast

The friends of Kenya Dolphins have set up the Dolphin Dhow, a dolphin –spotting and snorkeling trip around Wasini Island. The dhow leaves from Shimoni jetty at 8.45am daily and costs US$75. The price includes snorkeling equipment, drinks, a Swahili seafood lunch and the marine park fees.

5. Kisite Dhow Tours

The Kisite dhow tours runs a popular eco-tourist snorkeling trips to the marine park, including a nature walk on Wasini and a very good seafood lunch at Charlie’s claw’s original Wasini Island restaurant. Trips cost US$ 55 from Shimoni jetty, or US$ 75 with breakfast, drinks and visits to the coral gardens and slave caves.

6. Pilli-Pipa

This is another expat-owned company offering full day trips. The price is US$80 from Shimoni, including lunch, park fees, snorkeling and drinks. Diving trips are available at US$ 130/$145 for one/two dives.

7. Paradise Divers

Based in Diani also offers similar trips for US$ 80.
